I’m finally in the mood for Christmas music

November 29, 2011 | My Jottings

Back when I was in my twenties, I used to start playing Christmas records in October. I wanted the feel of this wondrous season to last a long time.

I don’t play Christmas carols in October much anymore, but today I am decidedly in the mood for Christmas music. We have a fantastic stereo system that plays music all over our house, and I love it. There are ceiling speakers in the den, the living room, the kitchen, laundry room, the master bedroom, master bathroom, and on the landing of the third floor. So we can put six CDs on our stereo and play soft music all over the house for hours. There are controls for each speaker, so if you want the music to play in the kitchen but not in the master bath, no problem.

Anyway, it has always been our tradition to buy one new Christmas CD (and sometimes two) each year. We have a nice variety already, but I’d love to have your help in determining what we should get this year.

What is one of your favorite Christmas CDs? Or if you have more than one, please share as many as you like.

I can’t wait to see what you enjoy, and thanks ahead of time for helping us add to our collection!

In response to the question at hand, do you have all of Amy Grant’s? Her first is my fave, but they are all special. How about Chris Rice Living Room Christmas? All piano, beautiful. I like Sara Groves’ newer Christmas album…also good ol’ Bing Crosby–the one with Mele Kelikimaka (sp?) and Christmas in Kilearney. I like Selah–Rose of Bethlehem…and that’s all I can think of right now.

I can’t remember if you’ve read “The Same Kind of Different As Me”? It’s a must read–esp. poignant for you at this time.

  2. Just Julie says:

Yes we have every one of hers and my favorite is the one with Highland Cathedral on it! We have Bing and Sara, but not Selah and Chris Rice…thank you for the tips, Jodi. I think I’ll go listen on itunes and order at least one of these two! Blessings….

  3. Ginny says:

Come on…is any Christmas complete without Nat King Cole’s warm creamy voice singing Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire? I can smell cinnamon and evergreen boughs when he sings!!!

  4. Just Julie says:

I totally agree Ginny! I love his voice and we do have his music – I haven’t played it yet though!

  5. Ember says:

Every year as soon as we are on the threshold of Advent, out two Christmas CDs go on. They are both simple instrumental recordings, one piano and cello, one piano and brass, both recordings by my children’s father (my first husband) who is just the best pianist ever. They are simple and beautiful, and let the carols be what they are without unhelpful embellishment.

  6. Just Julie says:

I think some of my favorites are the simple instrumentals, Ember. I wish I could hear Roger’s….

  7. Linda says:

    One of my CD favorites:
” This Glorious Christmas” by “Annie Moses Band”
But ANY album by these siblings is amazing. They play as if they are heaven sent. Actually I’m certain they are!

  8. Just Julie says:

Linda, I’ve never heard of them! I will take your word for it and get something by them right now…thank you so much!

  9. Sharon says:

We just got the Michael Buble Christmas CD, and everyone loves it. I’m also a big Harry Connick Jr Christmas fan.

  10. Just Julie says:

Okay now maybe I’ll get one of those! Thank you dotter…

  11. Kay says:

My husband and I love to sit quietly with a glass of red wine listening to any Christmas CD by John Rutter.
    Beautiful!

  12. Just Julie says:

I have never heard of him, Kay….I’ll look him up today. Thank you so much!

  13. sue raimo says:

New favorites include the Christmas CD’s by Il Divo, The Priests, and Susan Boyle. But my old Perry Como is a must.

  14. Just Julie says:

Thank you Sue….I am so glad I asked for people’s recommendations. I have several new CDs to consider this year – maybe even some of these as gifts. The one we have that you mentioned is Perry Como – his voice just makes me feel like sitting down for 2 quiet hours and watching the tree lights and counting my blessings. 🙂 LY.

  15. Carey says:

Thought I’d add a couple suggestions of my own…

    Kenny G – Miracles
Stevan Pasero – Christmas Classics for Guitar
    Johny Mathis – Christmas Is…
Christmas at the Brooklyn Tabernacle (very powerful!)

These are some of our favorites. Also, I agree with Sue…the Il Divo CD is pretty wonderful too! I have it on as I’m typing this to you!

  16. Just Julie says:

Thank you Carey…you’ve mentioned some we don’t have too…

I’m sitting in a dentist’s waiting room as I type this, but I think when I get home it will be time to add to our collection!

  17. Shari says:

    Here’s a crazy mix of sounds I enjoy…
Phil Keaggy – Majesty and Wonder
John Denver and the Muppets – A Christmas Together
Jewel – Joy: A Holiday Collection
Sara Groves – O Holy Night
Emmylou Harries – Light of the Stable
Sufjan Stevens – Songs for Christmas
    A Charlie Brown Christmas
    Rick Steve’s European Christmas
…and one song by George Strait – Christmas Cookies 🙂

  18. Just Julie says:

Wow Shari….what a great variety. Once again there are several I haven’t heard so will be looking those up. I love Rick Steves and had no idea he had a Christmas music CD! Thank you for sharing….

  19. Carolyn says:

    Michael Buble!

  20. Just Julie says:

Thank you Carolyn! I don’t know why I don’t have more of his music – I love his singing.

  21. Jessica says:

My favs are Manheim Steamroller and Lorie Line.

  22. Just Julie says:

Thank you Jessica….we have Lorie Line and I love the mood she creates!
