What exactly does this say about us?

July 6, 2011 | My Jottings

That we are exceedingly messy?  That we need more shoe trees?  That we don’t have enough closets?  That we have seven dozen children in our family?  That we like to go barefoot?  That we have too many adults living in this house?  That we are shoe sculptors?

So I ask you:

What does this picture, taken recently just inside our back door, really say about us?

When I first looked at the every growing or moving pile of shoes at your house, I wondered first why no one could ever put them back in the closet? Then I wondered why people don’t wear the same pair more often? Then I wondered why would anyone ever have that many pairs that are not in their closet? Then I thought do they use each pair for something different? Then I wondered if they were dog toys? I even wondered if there were hidden people in the home? I even wondered if they went to good will and someone had a shoe fetish? Who KNOWS? 🙂

I think all of your wonderings apply, Lar, except the last one. 🙂

Mmm I think it says there are lots of people at your house who like pink shoes!

  4. Just Julie says:

What a gracious thing to surmise, Helen. 🙂 I like your answer.

Julie, my front hall has an air of used shoe store as well. It is a sign of a home that has many inhabitants and visitors. A home that welcomes people to take your shoes off, relax and stay awhile. I will admit, it’s a mess, but who really needs order and neatness with a home full of family and friends?
Just a note to let you know that I just spent the most marvelous time reading your blog from the past month…I only had bits of time on the computer lately (mostly playing WWF) and it was so lovely to catch up with the Balmer household. Soooo….Happy Anniversary, good luck selling your home, keep looking for Cardinals, etc. Love to you…Sue

Dear Sue, I can’t tell you how your comment cheered me and made me smile. Thank you for what you wrote. See you in our Words With Friends where you pound me once again. 🙂

  7. Larry says:

Hey Sue: All those red birds she calls cardinals are moving south where the weather brings more bugs –

Back on the shoes, it could also mean that the reason they are all piled up there and not in the closet is because this all are the ones that fit and those in the closet are the ones that do not fit, you know – most people have one hand bigger than the other, well I have been told that the same goes for feet? My left one swells more than my right 🙂 If it were not for my berkenstocks no telling what I would have to put on my feet 🙂

  8. Just Julie says:

    😀

  9. Tauni says:

To me it says that no one will have to go barefoot unless they want to!

  10. Just Julie says:

    😀 xxoo

  11. Ember says:

It says that someone who cleans every last speck of dirt away lives in your home – look how clean the shoes are! Look how clean the floor is round where the shoes are stashed! It also says the person who stacked these shoes has infinite patience and maybe does not value her own time enough – because presumably she is the same person as the one who has to re-stack them all when the owner of the middle pair in the 2nd row up from the bottom takes them away. And it says that this house is somewhere a whole herd of people have stampeded to reach – presumably because the welcome is so loving.

Your words brought tears to my eyes, Ember. Thank you….
