Sue, you have convinced me. Everyone else’s comments had me swaying toward a tour, but now with your insight and experience, I think that’s the way I’ll go. Michael and I went to Scotland, England and Ireland in 2007 and rented a car. We did fine, but I do think we did too much and drove too many places. Not enough rest. That’s why I hesitated on a tour. But I think doing the driving on my own would be too much, perhaps. Yes, driving on the other side of the road, especially with a manual transmission for my left hand, with the narrow roads, was a nailbiter at times. God bless you dear Sue, and thank you again. xoxo

So much I want to write after reading your last two posts. I am so terribly sorry for misfortune. It is so hard to be dependent on others for daily life! I am a good caregiver and a horrible recipient. It is so hard to be patient. I will be praying for you!
Having just returned from Scotland and Ireland I feel qualified to give my advice. Go with a tour group! I went to Ireland ten years ago with a group and had an incredible experience. This time I traveled with my two daughters and one of my granddaughters. We rented a car and struck out on our own. In some ways it was a disaster. Driving on the wrong side of the road down very narrow roads is not for the faint of heart. I feel like we spent too much time driving, finding places, and just trying to live in an unknown area. It was very trying. Not to mention going the wrong way on a roundabout! But do go! It is delightful and I’m ready to go back again.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Nancy. I have cruised to Alaska twice and loved it. And my daughter thought Portugal was wonderful. I’ve always wanted to rent an RV as well, as I haven’t seen nearly as many national parks as I want! Blessings to you, Nancy… xoxo

All of the suggestions are great. You can’t go wrong in traveling anywhere. I would go with escorted tour for the reasons you mention. There are even trips for solo travelers. I went to grand canyon from Scottsdale AZ one year. It was a day trip but lovely. Many places in America are lovely. My nephew and family took a great cruise of Alaska from Seattle. Ireland is a great place to travel. I loved Portugal trip we went on in February. Weather was beautiful. It was an interesting country. If you and your husband are able to RV you can explore the national parks in the west from the comfort of your own mobile home. Happy travels

Helen, this is such fabulous information for me! Thank you so much for taking the time to write all you did. I’m looking into Arena Travel, and I love the idea of going with a tour, then adding some alone time. Bless you, dear friend. xoxo

I travel a lot with a small British run tour company (Arena Travel) who do fabulous small group trips – my last trip (to Uzbekistan) was 15 people and it was fabulous. The big advantage of an organised tour is that a) They do the homework b) you are really well looked after – so can just relax and enjoy and c) you get to see things that you just couldn’t on your own. I love it because I’m always with interesting like-minded individuals. Because it’s a small company it’s always possible to customise – do the tour of Ireland and then add on a week in a cottage…that way you would get the best of both worlds.
Yes, the Grand Canyon is certainly worth a visit. As are Glacier National Park, NYC, Oregon, Wyoming, Scotland, Maui and of course the Swiss Alps! I love to travel and think it changes your whole perspective on life. My next trip after a couple of trips to France and the UK, is Dubai to visit my son, who is working there and then Jordan in the spring! And Japan in early 24 is my retirement present to myself.
Favourite countries: India, Japan, Burma, Uzbekistan and the Maldives I think – oh and anywhere in Scandinavia!
