Thank you for visiting Peter! I so enjoyed reading about your great-grandmother’s kitchen donuts! I’ll be returning to Grand Marais this year and hope to introduce a couple of friends to those wonderful donuts. 🙂

I googled “grand marais walleye fish store” under images and your great photo came up. I was recalling a trip my daughter and I took from New Hampshire to Glacier National Park via part of the northern Great Lakes Circle Tour. World’s Best donuts was open, and we waited in line for … well, below I’ve copied a facebook entry I made. Thank you very much for your comments about where you were in the area. I do hope to get back there and not just to drive through and not just for the donuts.

I would just like to say that the March 2010 ratings of best doughnuts in bon appetit does not include the ne plus ultra: WORLD’S BEST DONUTS in GRAND MARAIS, MN, at 10 E. Wisconsin St. (opposite a GIANT WALLEYE sticking out of a building!). These confections (not the fish) achieve the hallowed reminiscence of my Great-grandma Tina’s Lincoln, Maine, kitchen donuts – fried in a coffee-pot of hot oil on her wood cookstove; a different donut, but another Himalayan benchmark, one which my daughter Nora and I can share. (We drove to Glacier National Park from NH via the spectacular Canadian roads by Lake Huron’s Georgian Bay and Lake Superior, a road trip well worth the difference in gas prices.) If you’re travelling anywhere near (and by that I mean Midwest near, not New England near), include this as one of the crucial waypoints heading west or east. Make sure to plan your trip so reach there when it is open.

It always brings tears to our eyes to read comments in the autograph books too. That’s what makes it all worthwhile! It was our dream for many years to build or renovate a place on the north shore. Someday we hope to add a B&B and provide breakfast(to the cottages too).We will look foreward to seeing you return again to your “cottage of repose”
Many blessings to you!
